Wednesday Market 101

The Dane County Farmers’ Market runs twice a week – Saturdays and Wednesdays – aren’t we lucky here in Madison? I often get the opportunity to venture to the Wednesday market during my lunch break, and let me tell you, it is a pure delight to be able to attend a farmers’ market during the middle of the week. If only I had the option to attend it daily!

Even though there aren’t as many farmers to choose from, there is still an array of options at the Wednesday market, and in May!

My Summer Reading List

As I plan on making a lot of lifestyle changes this summer, I’d like to read more. While I learn about the Dane County Farmers’ Market and all the food Wisconsin has to offer, I’m interested in gaining a broader knowledge about food and the culture that surrounds it.

The Madison Market Challenge

Two weeks ago it was forty degrees outside. Today’s high is ninety. Welcome to Wisconsin.

The university’s semester has ended, Memorial Day is a mere week away and The Terrace was already overflowing this weekend. Summer is in full swing here in the state’s capital.

I spent a lot of time outside yesterday. I started my day at the Dane County Farmers’ Market – talking to the vendors, trying fresh produce and watching the community enjoy the gorgeous day – the day ended at the Memorial Union Terrace – sipping on local beer, indulging in ice cream and laughing with good friends. You couldn’t ask for a better Saturday in May.

Kielbasa & Ice Cream

I love food. I’ve loved food for as long as I can remember. All kinds of food. I love food because of the smell, the vibrant colors, the memories it awakens, the smiles it summons. Food, a simple four letter word, can be extremely complex and controversial, it can be extremely simple and cooperative. I have a fascination with food. Some may call it an obsession. I call it a love affair.

I love the science of food. I love the art of food. I love the nature of food. Food, to me, is the best commonality between all of mankind. It is a necessity for survival, and a cherished ritual by many. Food itself has a past and a present and is connected to every one of us.

Growing up in the suburbs of Wisconsin, there were some important rules about food in our family that, as the oldest of three – and undoubtedly the spunkiest, to put it lightly – I learned at a young age.
